From humble beginnings to the growing business it is today, Coker Feed Mill, Inc. has been family owned and operated for over fifty years. It began in 1949, when Mr. Riley Coker became unable to tend his farmland due to crippling rheumatory arthritis. Mr. Riley had only a piece of family land and an idea. While he could no longer earn a living managing his own farm, he could run a business that would help other farmers. On December 10, 1949, Coker Feed Mill, Inc. opened its doors to local farmers, who brought their own grain to the mill for Mr. Riley to grind into feed for their livestock. While he claimed he was "no office man," Mr. Riley's business continued to grow. With the aid of a wheelchair, Mr. Riley spent a few hours at the mill every day, despite his worsening condition. In July of 1971, at the age of 69, Mr. Riley Coker Sr. went to be with the Lord. Mr. Riley's brother-in-law, James E. 'Shine' Smith, managed the mill until 1980, when Mr. Riley's son, Riley Brantley Coker Jr., became old enough to begin operating his father's business. Brantley had ambitions to continue his father's legacy, providing quality feed to his customers at a reasonable price. He worked many long, hard hours at the mill, growing his family's business with honesty, consistency, and quality. While his competitors were formulating their feed to maximize profit, Brantley maintained his high standards and excellent customer relations, stamping his personal guarantee on every bag sold. In 1985, Brantley developed his own line of equine feed, establishing the trademark Amber Grains, and continued to develop quality feed for his growing clientele. The business continues to grow today. Now, with four lines of feed for an array of animals, Coker Feed Mill, Inc. still guarantees every bag. |
